AWS and Google Cloud roll out new AI, compute, data, and planning updates
A roundup of new cloud announcements spanning AWS GPU and memory-optimized instances, SageMaker admin controls, regional availability notifications, MediaTailor monetization, JDBC encryption, and Google Cloud Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite GA.
Cloud vendors shipped a broad set of infrastructure and platform updates on May 7, 2026, with a strong emphasis on AI workloads, administration, security, and operational planning.
On the AWS side, the announcements range from new EC2 instance availability and SageMaker Unified Studio administration features to regional availability notifications, MediaTailor monetization functions, and client-side database encryption. Google Cloud, meanwhile, announced general availability for Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

AI and accelerated compute updates
Amazon EC2 G6 arrives in AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany)
Amazon EC2 G6 instances, powered by NVIDIA L4 GPUs, are now available in AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany). AWS positions G6 for both graphics-intensive and machine learning workloads.
According to AWS, the instances can be used to deploy ML models for natural language processing, language translation, video and image analysis, speech recognition, and personalization. They are also aimed at graphics workloads such as real-time rendering, cinematic-quality graphics, and game streaming.
- Up to 8 NVIDIA L4 Tensor Core GPUs
- 24 GB of memory per GPU
- Third generation AMD EPYC processors
- Up to 192 vCPUs
- Up to 100 Gbps network bandwidth
- Up to 7.52 TB of local NVMe storage
Amazon EC2 G7e launches in Europe (London)
AWS also expanded availability for EC2 G7e instances to the Europe (London) region. These instances are accelerated by NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs and are targeted at demanding AI and graphics-heavy workloads.
AWS says G7e offers up to 2.3x inference performance compared to G6e. The company highlights support for large language models, agentic AI models, multimodal generative AI models, and physical AI models, alongside spatial computing use cases.
- Up to 8 NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs
- 96 GB of memory per GPU
- 5th Generation Intel Xeon processors
- Up to 192 vCPUs
- Up to 1600 Gbps of networking bandwidth
Taken together, the G6 and G7e announcements show AWS broadening both sovereign-cloud GPU access and high-end AI infrastructure in major European regions.
Google Cloud makes Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite generally available
Google Cloud announced that Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite is now generally available on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. The company describes it as the fastest and most cost-efficient model in the Gemini 3 series.
Google says the model is designed for ultra-low latency, high-volume tasks, and cost-efficiency, and that customers are using it for agentic tasks such as tool calling and orchestration as well as automated pipelines at scale.
The positioning is clear: Flash-Lite is meant to give teams another option in the balance among intelligence, speed, and cost for production deployments.
Memory-intensive infrastructure expansion
EC2 X8i expands to Ireland and Mumbai
AWS announced that Amazon EC2 X8i instances are now available in the Europe (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Mumbai) regions. These instances are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available only on AWS.
AWS says X8i instances are SAP-certified and intended for memory-intensive workloads including SAP HANA, large databases, data analytics, and Electronic Design Automation (EDA).
- Up to 43% higher performance than previous generation X2i instances
- Up to 1.5x more memory capacity, reaching 6 TB
- Up to 3.3x more memory bandwidth
- Up to 50% higher SAPS performance versus X2i
- Up to 47% faster PostgreSQL performance versus X2i
Platform administration and operational planning
SageMaker Unified Studio adds identity and user management controls
Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio introduced new administration features for identity configuration and user management across both IAM and Identity Center domain types.
In SageMaker IAM domains, administrators can now onboard users through single sign-on by configuring AWS IAM Identity Center. After setup, admins can add IAM roles, IAM users, IAM Identity Center users, and IAM Identity Center groups as project members.
AWS also added a domain user management page for SageMaker IAM domains, giving administrators a consolidated view of users active in the domain. The update is designed to simplify collaboration across teams even when members authenticate in different ways.
AWS Capabilities by Region adds availability notifications
AWS announced availability notifications for AWS Capabilities by Region in AWS Builder Center. The feature is a subscription-based alerting system that notifies builders when AWS services or features become available in selected target regions.
AWS says the system covers more than 1,500 services and features across 37 AWS Regions. Subscriptions happen at the service level through the AWS Builder Center interface, and they automatically include underlying features across the selected regions.
Notifications are delivered through in-app alerts in AWS Builder Center and through email, giving teams another way to track regional readiness for infrastructure planning and deployment.
Media monetization and data security
MediaTailor adds monetization functions
AWS Elemental MediaTailor now supports monetization functions, a feature that lets customers customize how ad decision server requests are built and how session data is managed during ad-personalized playback.
AWS says customers can call external APIs and run inline data transformations at defined points in the playback session, reducing the need to build and operate middleware between the player and the ad decision server.
Examples cited by AWS include:
- Resolving hashed email addresses into privacy-compliant identity envelopes via providers such as LiveRamp
- Appending contextual metadata from a content management system through providers like GraceNote
- Activating header bidding workflows through providers like The Trade Desk
- Running A/B tests during monetized playback flows
AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper adds client-side encryption
The AWS Advanced JDBC Wrapper now provides column-level client-side encryption through its KMS Encryption plugin. The wrapper already offers capabilities such as failover handling, AWS authentication integration, and enhanced monitoring for Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS open source databases.
AWS says the new plugin allows Java applications to encrypt sensitive data before it reaches the database and does so without changing application code.
The company frames the feature as a way to address a security gap left by encryption at rest and TLS in transit, since those controls still leave data decrypted within the database engine. AWS notes that plaintext exposure risks can stem from compromised credentials, overprivileged administrators, or SQL injection attacks, with implications for PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR compliance.
What stands out across these announcements
Several themes cut across the day’s launches:
- AI infrastructure expansion: AWS is increasing availability for GPU-backed EC2 families in Europe, while Google Cloud is emphasizing low-latency, cost-efficient model access.
- Enterprise operational fit: X8i, SageMaker identity management, and regional notifications are aimed at planning, governance, and large-scale deployment needs.
- Monetization and security depth: MediaTailor and the JDBC encryption update focus on practical controls that sit close to revenue flows and sensitive data.
